If you’ve been charged with your first DUI, then you probably have no idea about what to expect when you go in to meet with an attorney for an initial consultation. All you may know is that you probably need to seek the help of an experienced DUI attorney, especially if you’ve been charged with DUI in Raleigh.
North Carolina has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to DUIs, so it should come as no surprise that the consequences of being convicted can be quite severe, resulting in huge fines and fees and even jail time in some cases.
First of all, most DUI attorneys offer a complimentary initial consultation. During this meeting, you and the attorney can get a sense of one another, and you can determine whether or not the attorney is one you feel comfortable working with.
During the initial consultation, the attorney will usually ask you to explain the events leading up to your arrest. The attorney will likely ask you questions pertaining to where you were going, whether or not you drinking, or if you committed any traffic violations. He or she will want to know why the police officer pulled you over and if you were involved in an accident, especially if anybody was hurt. Lastly, he or she will want to know whether or not you submitted to a breathalyzer or other blood alcohol content test, if you submitted to any field sobriety tests and whether or not there were any witnesses to the incident.
