If you’re arrested for drunk driving, then you need to hire an attorney who specializes in DUI law. You wouldn’t want to hire a family attorney, or some other type of attorney, any more than you would hire a stonemason to do electrical work at your home.
It’s Worth the Cost
Even if you have to pay a little extra to hire a DUI attorney, it will cost you less in the long run. In some states, even a misdemeanor DUI can never be expunged from your record. Having a DUI conviction not only means higher insurance rates and at least some amount of restricted driving privileges, it also means that you may be ineligible for many jobs, especially those involving driving.
The Right Kind of Experience
Essentially, a DUI attorney works on drunk driving cases every working day, and there’s no replacement for that kind of experience. A practicing DUI attorney will know all the players in a local DUI arrest: the prosecutors, judges, police, etc. They will have working relationships with many of these people and will know how to work effectively within the system.
For example, if the police officer who arrested you has a history of questionable arrests, the attorney will know this and be able to turn it to your advantage. It’s possible that your attorney will be able to get the charges reduced to something less damaging than DUI or even thrown out entirely.
